Septic Distribution Boxes

Drainage Problems?

Problems with your septic system? Perhaps your drain field is unevenly saturated? The septic distribution box is downhill from your septic tank and is supposed to "distribute" the wastewater to each trench at the same rate. However, when it gets clogged, you might need to clear out the sludge and remove blockages from your lines that have gotten bogged down. Sometimes, levelers might be needed to dry out oversaturated areas and redirect to the dry ones. This is not a remedy for failing systems, but a diagnostic fix to see how your absorption area is performing. Distribution Boxes should be dug up and inspected every 10 years. Jetting is sometimes needed to clear out any blockage. If jetting and leveling don't solve the saturation issue, you may have a failing system.

Septic distribution boxes are an essential component of septic systems. Here's how they work:

  1. Receive Effluent: The distribution box receives the effluent (wastewater) from the septic tank outlet pipe.
  2. Equal Distribution: Once the effluent enters the distribution box, it is evenly distributed to multiple perforated pipes or distribution lines that lead to the drain field.
  3. Prevent Overloading: By distributing the effluent evenly, the distribution box helps prevent overloading of any single portion of the drain field. This ensures that the wastewater is dispersed over a larger area, allowing for better absorption and treatment by the soil.
  4. Maintain System Efficiency: Proper distribution of wastewater helps maintain the overall efficiency and longevity of the septic system. Uneven distribution can lead to saturation of certain areas of the drain field, causing premature failure and the need for costly repairs.
